Pinot Gris is a grape originating from the Burgundy region of France, like its familiar red cousin, Pinot Noir, but is also commonly grown in Italy and Germany.
It grows readily in Marlborough, where the plants are often spur-pruned, to even out the ripening of the fruit. With New Zealand's cooler, maritime climate, our Pinot Gris are more often similar to the German style wines than the French or Italian.
This Pinot Gris can be enjoyed young, as a refreshing aperitif, or, given a little time, it will develop, offering a variety of more subtle flavours.
Awards:
Peter Saunders, Wine Judge, 4 out of 5 stars; Youthful wine, of course, at six months, but starting to unfold. Nicely clean and fresh with good fruit. Will show very well after Christmas 2017 and for two more years after that.
Harvest: The grapes for this Pinot Gris were grown on the fertile soils of Marlborough's Wairau Valley, in New Zealand’s South Island, alongside our more well known Sauvignon Blanc. The crop was machine harvested on 14 April, then transported to Spring Creek for wine making by renowned New Zealand winemaker Alan McCorkindale. After gentle pressing, the resulting juice underwent fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks.
